Reduce environmental impact and track carbon emissions on exhibition and set design & build projects.

Join this half-day workshop at Sparks Bristol to learn how to use an open-source Impact Model created to help design and build teams measure carbon emissions and make better design decisions. The aim of this workshop is to support the reduction of the environmental impact of exhibition design and build.

The toolkit, developed by URGE Collective, builds on findings from an environmental audit of the Waste Age exhibition at The Design Museum, London. The Sparks workshop will be led by URGE’s Alexie Sommer and is aimed at design and build teams, designers, artists, project managers or design and build team leaders who are delivering temporary or permanent exhibitions or physical constructions such as sets for television and theatre.

The workshop will be co-facilitated by Jenny Ford (No Small Thing / Materials in Mind) with support from Arts Council England funding.

After the workshop, you’ll be able to use the Impact model on your design and build projects to help make better design decisions and start tracking project carbon emissions.

Programme:

• 13.30 Arrival – We will start promptly at
• 13:45. 13:45 Introductions Urge Collective – research work developed with the Design Museum. Present the guide and Impact model. Who’s working on what and where are they placed in terms of measuring and reducing impact. Please can participants bring any relevant examples of typical projects for discussion.
• 15.00-15:45 Activity: Mapping Material Resources This will involve reflecting on typical material palettes and design and build processes.
• 15:45 – 15 min break Tea & Coffee
• 16:00-17:00 Activity: Get to grips with the Impact Model. URGE will demonstrate how to use the Impact model and Jenny Ford (No Small Thing / Materials in Mind) will show users how to adapt the model for different sector / project uses.
• 17:00-17:30pm Summary and Q&A

• Please bring a laptop with Excel/Numbers installed (the impact model we will be using and adapting is in excel format).
• The workshop will be held in the Department of Discovery and is wheelchair accessible. BSL is available upon request.

Your facilitators:

Alexie Sommer is a designer and communication expert who focuses on business sustainability. She is a founding member of URGE Collective, a mentor for Fashion for Good, a consultant strategist with Pentagram, a sustainable human at Group of Humans and was previously creative director at Thomas Matthews and design director for creative at The Guardian newspaper group.

Jenny Ford is the founder of Materials in Mind and No Small Thing. As a designer and systems thinker, she brings a creative approach to waste and resource management within the built environment. She is a circular economy consultant, researcher and resource activist.
